Former First Lady Michelle Obama is campaigning for Vice President Kamala Harris by deploying drag queens to host performances all over key swing states.
This is part of an initiative called “Party at the Polls,” which will include a series of live performances in swing states, including drag shows, which the Democratic Party seems to believe will motivate more people to cast their vote for Harris, especially in places where she is losing ground to former President Donald Trump. The Party at the Polls initiative is part of the “When We All Vote” program, which Obama founded in 2018. There will be around 500 Party at the Polls events in multiple states, including key swing states Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. The former first lady herself is expected to headline a When We All Vote rally on Oct. 29 in Georgia.
In Arizona, a Party at the Polls event included performances by members of the “Drag Out The Vote” drag queen group, which urges voters who identify as members of the LGBTQIA+ community to cast their ballots.
In Nevada, another drag show will be held on Oct. 29 featuring Taylor Ratliff, a drag queen who performs under the name “Plasma” and competed in the drag queen TV series “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”
Also in Arizona, actor Mark Ruffalo, known for playing superhero The Hulk in Disney’s Marvel movies, is headlining When We All Vote events all over the state. He also joined a “Walk to the Polls” advocacy group attempting to increase first-time voter participation among members of the Navajo Nation.
When We All Vote announced a sweepstakes getting registered voters to volunteer with the group to get people to vote, with the prize being the opportunity to see hip hop artist Cardi B perform at a music festival in the city later this month. The prize package includes two tickets and a travel credit of up to $1,200.
Despite being officially nonpartisan, When We All Vote has been aggressively pushing for early voting and mail-in voting options, especially for first-time voters.
“The election doesn’t start on Election Day – it ends on Election Day,” said When We All Vote Executive Director Beth Lynk. “Mrs. Obama, our co-chairs and ambassadors, and voters will all come together. Together, we will take our momentum and energy to the ballot box and set the tone for the entire country – especially first-time voters – to vote early.”
The initiative is also backed by a whole host of liberal Hollywood and sports celebrities. Many of these notable figures have made past public statements and endorsements that are anything but nonpartisan.
Some notable celebrities that have endorsed Harris include actor Tom Hanks and his wife Rita, actress Kerry Washington and actor and songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda.
